Dear Editor,
Kevin Casey’s ‘Why Climate Change is an Irrelevance, economic growth is a myth…and sustainability is forty years too late’ (Jan 2020)raises some useful arguments in an attempt to explain the global crisis of today. Unfortunately his discussion of population growth and urban renewal destroying nature mainly applies to First World western economies, not to the poorer Third World. The world is not uniform. A distinction needs to be drawn between First and Third world countries. Generally fertility rates are declining in the former but rising in the latter. Why? Because they are poor and the First world has made them that way and will continue to do so to maintain their position of dominance.
